Naming Ceremony of Jonathan KS Choi Art Studio at Lingnan University, Hong Kong

Sunwah – The Naming Ceremony of Jonathan KS Choi Art Studio was held at Lingnan University, Hong Kong, on 3rd April 2018, in appreciation of Dr Jonathan Choi’s generous donation to the establishment of the Jonathan Choi Student Exchange and Internship Scheme at Lingnan University. The Ceremony was hosted by Mr Rex Auyeung Pak-kuen, Chairman of the Council of Lingnan University, and Professor Leonard K Cheng, President of Lingnan University. Dr Jonathan Choi was the Guest of Honor.

From the academic years of 2018 to 2022, the Jonathan Choi Student Exchange and Internship Scheme will provide financial aids to full-time undergraduate students who have financial difficulties in participating in Mainland China and overseas’ exchange programs. The Scheme will also provide subsidies to students to join internship programs in companies recommended by Dr Jonathan Choi in China and other countries.
The Jonathan KS Choi Art Studio is located on the third floor of the New Academic Block on Lingnan campus, which serves as a studio for Lingnan’s Artists-in-Residence and classroom for the Department of Visual Studies. It will also be used as a venue for events such as internal and public arts workshops, seminars and exhibitions.

In his Opening speech, Mr Rex Auyeung Pak-kuen, Chairman of the Council of Lingnan University, expressed his sincere thanks to Dr Jonathan Choi for his contributions over the years. “Dr Choi is a distinguished entrepreneur and a renowned philanthropist, who spares no effort in supporting education,” said Mr Auyeung. Dr Choi became a member of Lingnan University in 2011 when he was conferred Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences.
At the Ceremony, Dr Jonathan Choi shared that in recent years, Lingnan University has actively extended its network of collaborating institutions in China and other countries, aiming to offer more academic and cultural exchange opportunities to students. He pointed out that seizing internship opportunities are very important and practical for young people who will start their careers in a few years. He hoped students benefitted by the Jonathan Choi Student Exchange and Internship Scheme can put their knowledge and skills into good use and help their schoolmates as well as contribute to the betterment of the society in future.

In his speech of thanks, Professor Leonard K Cheng, President of Lingnan University, pointed out that the naming of an art studio was chosen as the way to thank Dr Choi for his support to not only education, but also cultural and arts development. “Dr Choi has collaborated with a number of Mainland and overseas universities as well as establish Jonathan KS Choi cultural centers, galleries and museums, with the aim of facilitating cultural exchanges and collaborations between China and other countries. We hope to follow Dr Choi’s example to further promote arts and cultural development in Hong Kong”, said President Cheng.
