Dr Jonathan Choi, Chairman of Sunwah Group, visited Yunnan province, China

Sunwah – On January 6, Sunwah Group and the People’s Committee of Lao Cai province (Vietnam) held an online conference on promoting trade exchange between the two border regions of China and Vietnam in Mengzi City, Honghe Hani, Yunnan province, China. The online conference witnessed the participation of Dr Jonathan Choi, Chairman of Sunwah Group; Mr Nguyen Trung Hieu, Vietnam Consul General in Kunming; Mr Hoang Quoc Khanh, Vice-Chairman of the Lao Cai Provincial People’s Committee; Mr Luo Rongxu, Vice Governor of Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, and the delegation of Chinese businesses.

Dr Jonathan Choi shared, in recent years, trade exchanges between Vietnam and China have become more and more frequent and the business scale is constantly increasing. Under the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic, trade exchanges between the two countries were also affected, Dr Choi proposed the Lao Cai Provincial Government and the Government of Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture to issue new supportive policies to facilitate better trade exchanges. To meet the needs of the market and maximize the Group’s strengths, with the leadership of Dr Jonathan Choi, Sunwah Group is ready and willing to support businesses from both sides to jointly plan for future development and opportunities.

As one of the business representatives speaking at the conference, Mr Wang Jin, Regional General Director of Sunwah Group in Southwest introduced the Group’s economic and commercial activities in Yunnan province as well as the vision on economic and trade cooperation between Vietnam’s Ha Khau border gate and Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture. As a representative for businesses under the China Federation of Industrial Economics, JOINN Co. expressed its desire to learn about application and review procedures, support policies in the biomedical industry, specifically conducting clinical trials and mass production in the border areas of Vietnam and China. Representatives from China and Vietnam both expressed their support for the establishment of communication mechanisms and accelerated implementation.

Finally, in order to promote economic and trade cooperation between China and Vietnam, Dr Jonathan Choi proposed the establishment of the China – Vietnam Business Alliance, to provide an effective platform for exchange and cooperation. For the time being, Vietnam and Yunnan province have a cooperation mechanism for the Kunming – Lao Cai – Ha Noi – Hai Phong -Quang Ninh Economic Corridor (called the China – Vietnam Economic Corridor from Yunnan side), with a meeting scheduled every two years, together with taking the 4 border provinces and 8 provinces in the North of Vietnam as a basis, to establish a connecting platform between enterprises, and to maximize resources and the role as a bridge of Sunwah Group. Consul General Mr Nguyen Trung Hieu suggests Dr Choi to promote the establishment of the “China – Vietnam Economic Corridor Business Association”, possibly organizing meetings to discuss government cooperation based on the APEC model. The Vietnamese Consul General in Kunming, Mr Nguyen Trung Hieu, the leader of the Lao Cai Provincial People’s Committee and the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture government all expressed their support for the proposal of Dr Jonathan Choi. The two sides will soon announce policy adjustments to facilitate businesses of both sides, as well as foster the trade exchange in the future.
