Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomes Dr. Jonathan Choi and 70 entrepreneurs from the Greater Bay Area to visit Cambodia

Khmer Times – On the morning of 8 April 2024, His Excellency Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, met with a delegation of entrepreneurs from China’s Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, led by Dr Jonathan Choi.

From Cambodian government, there were Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, and Ministers of 11 ministries including the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Ministry of Tourism, and the head of the Cambodia Development Council.

The delegation consisted of 70 entrepreneurs from the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce of Hong Kong (CGCC) and the Guangdong – Hong Kong – Macao Greater Bay Area Entrepreneurs Alliance (GBA Alliance). Dr. Jonathan Choi, a Standing Committee member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, Chairman of both CGCC and GBA Alliance, and Chairman of Sunwah Group, served as the leader.

Prime Minister Hun Manet mentioned Dr. Choi is an old friend of Cambodia. He and Sunwah Group have invested in Cambodia since 1994 and have always regarded Cambodia as an important investment location. This time, he led a 70-member delegation of entrepreneurs from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to Cambodia to explore business opportunities, which showed that both parties not only have short-term business goals but also have long-term goals for cooperation and exchanges.
The Cambodian government has been committed to promoting the construction of interconnected infrastructure such as highways and deep-sea ports. This year’s GDP growth is expected to reach 6.6%, ranking among the top three in Asia. Cambodia needs stable and lasting development.

Dr. Choi acknowledged Cambodia’s rapid development and its attractiveness to Greater Bay Area entrepreneurs. He mentioned past collaborations, such as the Promotion Summit of Cambodia to GBA, indicating the growing economic ties between Cambodia and the Greater Bay Area. Dr. Choi expressed confidence in Cambodia’s future and outlined Sunwah Group’s investment plans in the country. Sunwah will develop the “Sunwah Pearl” luxury real estate project in the center of Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. This establishment includes apartments, commercial complexes, hotels, etc., with a total investment of more than 1.5 billion US dollars. With the strong support of the Cambodian government, it is expected to be gradually completed in three phases.

In addition, Dr. Choi said that Sihanoukville is a very high-quality deep-sea port. Sunwah owns more than 10 hectares of land in Sihanoukville and can build a Sunwah Sihanoukville Logistics Industrial Park. Sunwah Group also presented green economy initiatives, focusing on electric vehicles, energy storage, and recycling technology. Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed these projects, emphasizing Cambodia’s desire to attract Chinese tourists and export agricultural products to mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau.

The meeting concluded with discussions on furthering cooperation and potential visits between Cambodian officials and counterparts in Hong Kong and Macau to deepen bilateral ties.
